Blender doesn't default to my .blend file folder

When I attempt to open a .blend file, Blender does not automatically go to the folder with my .blend files.
If I have already opened a blend, and try to open another during the same session, it does, but never when I first start Blender.
I've had this problem for a while, but just now thought to ask about it?
Anybody know what I may have wrong?
thanks

I don't think it's really a problem, what happens is that blender defaults to some old directory, but when you load a file from your "models" folder, it will save that path to it's memory so that when you repeat, it goes to the last location opened from. But I recently discovered that you can bookmark paths in blender. If I'm not mistaken, it's a practically unknown feature as there are requests for it on blenderstorm and such.
Make sure to scroll image down, after Kernon upgraded the forum the images don't show fully.

Now you can conveniently go to your favorite directories in blender when you hit Shift-F1.

That's been a problem for as long as I've used Blender! The bookmark option is only in the latest revisions of 2.49. In fact, I don't even have it in my version.

Thanks for the tip.
EDIT: This only seems to be available when browsing using the thumbnails option (Ctrl-click a Load button). It's not available if you want to load a new blend file.

Fortunately, many of these kind inconsistencies will be resolved in 2.5.
EDIT2: Okay, this
does work for loading a blend file when first starting a blender session! Still a bit goofy (and generally unknown) solution, but it works.

This will make a good blog post! I'll be sure to credit you.

@Kernon, I was sure it was there a few versions back!

i'll take a look at this when I get home on my computer there, but its still not exactly working for me now, it may be because I'm using a portable version of blender.
Maybe I'm missing something, when I first open up blender, and hit F1, it does not open up the folder where I have all my blend files.
I don't see the "B" option when opening a blend file the first time I open Blender.

Yeah, I just never saw it since I always stayed away from the thumbnail browser because it would crash my Blender.

@zyzzy
You have to Ctrl-click on a Load button (like in the screenshot) and set the bookmark in that context. That's the only place it's available. When they added the improved file browser, they didn't update the interface for the other (main) file browser.

okay, I think I got it.
Cntr+click a load button, set a bookmark for my blend folder.
Then when first opening blender, and then a blend file, it still won't default to my blend folder, but I can use the drop-down and choose my bookmarked location to avoid searching for the folder.
That is helpful, thanks everyone.
But still, I remember a few versions ago, 2.48 maybe, it would automatically go to my .blend folder.

It still does it, but sometimes it doesn't.

Okay, another question related to this topic.
How do I remove bookmarked file locations? On my portable blender it used to be the G: drive on my computer, but now for some reason it is my I: drive. I have created new bookmarks but no need to remove the G: bookmarks?

go to C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender
(or where ever your .blend folder is located)
Find the .BFS file, open with notepad, and edit out the paths you don't want.
For example, I have a bookmark pointing to;
C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\Models\
To get rid of it in blender, I would just erase that line.

All of a sudden, starting two days ago, Blender once again, defaults to my blend file folder when I go to open a file. I have no idea what I did, or why it does it now and didn't for a couple of months.
Also, when I click "Open Recent", it now lists the most recent blend files I had opened, which it used to do long ago, but then didn't while I was having this problem, but now does again.
I wish I knew what was causing all this... but at least all is well again in my little place in Blenderville!

That is weird.

Good to hear that all is well again.
